Tower Communications
The firm’s name Tower Communications was selected by the PRSSA chapter because of the water tower that sits prominently on the campus. The tower was erected in 1897 to supply water to the campus. Although now inoperative, the tower still stands as a reminder to students, faculty, staff, and local residents of West Virginia State University’s proud history.
Tower has successfully completed contracts totaling nearly $40,000. All of the work was developed and implemented by the students. This included proposal preparation/presentation, implementation, and evaluative final reports to clients. As a result of these achievements the West Virginia PRSA awarded the 2007 Crystal Award to the chapter and its firm in the area of Community Relations, and the 2005 Crystal for Press Kit development and an honorable mention for Colateral Materials. The first Crystal was received by the Chapter & Tower in 2003 for the S.H.I.P Happens! (Shelter-in-Place) Crisis Communications Campaign.
Between 2010-2007 Tower Communication grew its client base and portfolio to include The Mocombeian Foundations's 1st Annual Golf Classis to benefit Hatian student scholarships, a website launch for the WV State History & Culture Committee, the WV State Community and Technical College’s (now Kanawha Valley CTC) “Growing Home” Tourism Symposium, the Islamic Association of WV’s Capitol Complex Film Premiere of “Prince Among Slaves,” and the People Concerned about MIC’s “Bhopal Disaster Tour.”
These achievements have received attention from the WVSU administration, community, non-profits, as well as state and local government officials who continue to award contracts to the chapter and the student-run firm.
